Whitetail Deer Hunting in Kentucky

Kentucky is one of the nation's biggest `sleeper' states when it come to big whitetails, according to our Midwestern correspondent, "Kentucky is a particularly great whitetail spot. It's where many recent Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young qualifiers have been bagged, a number of them in Grayson, Butler and Christian counties. Fertile riverbottoms here planted in row crops yield high quality forage, while deep hollows, rugged hills and scattered bogs provide cover where bucks can hide while growing large racks. The good news is, non-residents can buy a Kentucky deer license by simply walking into a sporting goods store, a Wal-Mart or even some gas stations and plopping down the cash. A 2013 non-resident hunting license cost $130, a deer tag $60. The price is the same for those who hunt with bows, black powder, or modern rifles.

Last deer season was arguably the state’s best ever. A record 68 bucks taken in Kentucky qualified for entry into the Boone & Crockett record books, a record for the state.

Kentucky hunters also posted the fourth best overall harvest with119,656 deer, the highest total since the 2008-09 season. In 96 of Kentucky’s 120 counties, hunters bagged more deer than in the 2010-2011 deer season.
